Festa 2020 postponed
NSW Health have advised that we are just too BIG to run this October in the current Covid Climate – as arguably the largest street festival in Australasia with up to 200,000 attending on the one day there is no-way we could guarantee or enforce the physical distancing rules of 1.5m between people and the rule of 1 person per 4-square metres
We are devasted as this event has grown in every way year on year to be what visitors, sponsors and stallholders say is the best street festival in the country
We will definitely be back as usual in 2021 on Sunday 31st October
(Festa is always held on the last Sunday in October)
However, before then we are looking at options of dates for alternate events including; maybe a series of smaller more controllable events, a Festa in a new format with maybe a virtual component and finally if by chance a corona anti-dote or cure is found soon maybe a rescheduling of the 2020 Festa to a new date in maybe March 2021!
That’s right, potentially 2 Festas in the 1 calendar year, each with a different angle…..
We will keep you posted!
The FESTA Team
Sunday October 25th 2020, 10AM TO 5PM
A celebration of community spirit and everything that makes Australia great – with an Italian slant.
Quite probably the largest street festival in Australia.
Festa is a wonderful celebration of what makes Leichhardt special and why more than 140,000 people attend each year.
And Festa’s free!
In 1986, the first Norton Street Italian Festa was organised by the Capuchin Priests at St Fiacres Church in Leichhardt who wanted to replicate the religious festivals of Italy. Norton Street in Leichhardt has long been the emotional and physical centre of the Italian community in Sydney and is known as ‘Little Italy’. It was the first stop for many, if not most, of the Italians who disembarked in Sydney. They either established roots in Leichhardt and created a thriving community or used it as the staging point to look for work in the cane fields of Queensland and elsewhere.
- Fantastic community spirit
- Located in the heart of Sydney’s ‘Little Italy’ and featuring cooking demonstrations
- Fun, family day out that has something special for everyone
- A wonderful meeting of culturally rich locals and visitors from all over Sydney of all ages, professions and backgrounds
- Supported by Inner West Council

Sponsor Spotlight - The Sydney Bus Museum
For the first time, the Sydney Bus Museum will be participating in the Norton Street Festival! Formed in 1986, the Sydney Bus Museum relocated to the Leichhardt Bus Depot precinct in 2016 after being located at Tempe for many years. The Museum has over 35 buses on display, as well as taxis, street furniture, signs and much more. We are located off Derbyshire Rd and will be open for the Festival from 10am to 5pm with double decker bus rides into the City operating twice per hour. We will also have two historic Sydney buses on display on Norton Street.
Sponsor Spotlight - McCarrolls Alfa Romeo
‘McCarrolls Alfa Romeo is excited to be involved with Norton Street Festa for the first time ever, showcasing 3 of the latest models from our range! For an extra touch of Italian flair we will also be featuring the Maserati Levante SUV. Visit us at for a coffee and a chat at McCarrolls Alfa Romeo + Maserati Artarmon, your new Italian vehicle destination on the North Shore.’
Sponsor Spotlight - Bendigo Bank
Bendigo Bank Leichhardt is proud to be a sponsor of Festa 2019. It is such an incredible festival which means so much to the local community. We are very excited to be involved this year.
As part of the festivities, Bendigo Bank Leichhardt will be activating a number of family friendly activities within Short Street; giant LEGO, make your own slime and face painting. We will also have our ‘Bendigo Bank Communitree’ set-up. As part of this activation people will be invited to hang one of three coloured streamers from the tree. Each coloured streamer will represent a local charity. The charity with the most coloured streamers at the end of the day will win $1,000 towards their charity. Come and say hi to the team.
Bendigo Bank recently opened their newly renovated Leichhardt branch. Located in the heart of Leichhardt’s bustling shopping, eatery and entertainment precinct next to the Plaza at Shop 1, 51 Norton St, the innovative new space flips the traditional concept of a bank branch, allowing customers and communities access to information, experts, technology, services and products – both from the Bank and other local businesses – in ways they value. The new branch also features a Retail Pop-Up space that local makers can utilise and a community space that can be rented for events, meetings and workshops.
Sales wise they were a huge success but also the team, organisation, communication and bump in and out were fantastic! By far the best organised events of the year.
I wish you could be across a few other festivals - they could use the help!!
“We want to formally recognise the Italian heart of Sydney. So at this year’s Festa we will be consulting the community about the right precinct area and the right name for the Italian precinct.
“Make sure you let us know your ideas for recognising the home of Italy in Sydney by dropping by Council’s Your Say Inner West stall on the day.”
Festa plays a valuable role in the local community as an authentic celebration of the Italian culture that underpins Leichhardt’s local heritage. Leichhardt & Annandale Business Chamber has again appointed Leichhardt businessman Patrick O’Reilly, Impact Exhibitions + Events. Through their collaborative dedication they have ensured the ongoing success of this iconic local community event.
I look forward to continued involvement with the Festa and wish the team every success for creating memorable events in the future
Food has always been a central part of Festa, just as it is central to the Italian way of life. One of the most popular aspects of Festa is the cooking demonstrations by celebrity chefs who willingly share their traditional family recipes. All this wonderful Italian food and the Italian way is that food is to be enjoyed with something to drink!
Just like other LABC member businesses, The Royal Hotel will be a gathering place on the day, with our 2 outdoor beer gardens adding to the atmosphere on Norton Street. We look forward to your family and friends joining us, and for a bird’s eye street view of Festa, The Royal’s recently restored heritage balcony will be open for anyone to enjoy!
